Federation urges immediate action to tackle pollution in Limassol bay
The Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus (Opok) has called for stricter measures to protect Limassol bay, demanding an immediate, coordinated, and scientifically documented response to pollution incidents. Opok emphasized the urgent activation of the Pollution Response Supervision and Coordination Group (PESA), established by the Council of Ministers in February 2025, to ensure rapid on-site inspections and effective pollution control.
Recent pollution events include sewage discharge near Moni, unpleasant odors and waste along Limassol’s coastline, and a white substance with sanitary waste found at Armonia beach in Ayios Tychonas. Opok also stressed the importance of implementing the seventh protocol of the Barcelona convention for integrated coastal zone management to safeguard the marine environment.
Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanoli acknowledged these pollution incidents and confirmed that authorities have addressed them. She stated that while Cyprus’ waters remain clean overall, further measures have been agreed upon to enhance monitoring and improve response times to future pollution threats.
