Cyprus revises artist status bill aiming for final approval by year-end
Cyprus’ deputy ministry of culture is undertaking a substantial revision of the long-awaited Artist Registry and Artistic Grant Law of 2025, with hopes of finalizing the new legislative framework by the end of the year. The revision follows extensive consultations with artists’ organisations, international cultural policy experts, and government officials.
A key change in the updated bill is the complete removal of the proposed artistic grant scheme for self-employed artists, which was deemed inadequate to meet the community’s needs and is now being redesigned. Other significant amendments will address the conditions for registering artists and their associations, reconsider the definition of an artist, and take into account the unique characteristics of different artistic disciplines.
The original bill, approved by cabinet in January 2025, faced criticism during parliamentary and committee reviews, prompting its return for reconsideration. The deputy ministry remains committed to creating a balanced and functional framework to safeguard artists’ positions and support the sustainable development of Cyprus’ cultural ecosystem.
