Prosecution Witness Accused of Lying and Concealing Sexual Harassment Case in Avakoum Monastery Trial
During Monday’s hearing at the Nicosia criminal court, a prosecution witness known as ‘father B’ was accused by the defence of lying and hiding a pending sexual harassment case against him. Defence lawyer Efstathios Efstathiou challenged the witness's credibility by highlighting attempts to conceal the allegations and questioned his previous statements under cross-examination.
‘Father B’ denied the accusations, emphasizing that the sexual harassment case is still an allegation rather than a proven fact. The cross-examination also probed into personal interactions, including a birthday card given to a 14-year-old girl at the monastery and gifts such as girdles and vestments, which ‘father B’ claimed were necessities managed by the abbot and not personal presents.
Further scrutiny involved signatures on documents related to volunteers at the monastery, including minors. The trial is set to continue on Wednesday with the defence planning to further explore the evidence.
