Cyprus’ Regional Aerial Firefighting Station to Receive Funding for New Aircraft, Expands EU Hub Role
Cyprus’ Regional Aerial Firefighting Station (CRAFS) is set to receive co-funding for two new firefighting aircraft, boosting its capabilities as an operational and training hub for the EU and neighboring countries, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas announced. The funding process is at an advanced stage, with a positive outcome expected soon. These aircraft will primarily support countries in the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood and significantly enhance the station’s operational readiness.
CRAFS will serve a dual role, both supporting regional aerial firefighting operations and acting as a center for training, certification, and research. It will provide command and control for firefighting missions and develop common standards and protocols to improve interoperability among participating countries. The hub’s location in Cyprus reflects its strategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean and EU’s Southern Neighbourhood.
With infrastructure completed in April 2026, the facility is already preparing for its first regional workshop involving over ten countries and international organizations. Palmas highlighted the facility’s importance as the project begins, aiming to make CRAFS a key reference point for firefighting coordination across Europe and the wider region.
