Cyprus discusses therapeutic home for children in state care with complex mental health needs
The Cyprus Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights is discussing the creation of a therapeutic home for children under state care who face serious mental health challenges. The initiative aims to provide 24-hour intensive therapy for a limited time to better support these vulnerable children. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou revealed ongoing talks with the Ministers of Health and Education to advance this project.
Currently, about 400 children are under state care, with most placed in foster families, according to Pavlou. However, a significant gap was identified for those requiring specialized mental health services beyond existing provisions. The Deputy Minister stressed that addressing these children's needs demands close collaboration across multiple ministries and agencies, as no single department can manage alone.
Concerns were raised over cases of children fleeing care homes, exclusion from education, and substance abuse issues among youth in care. The Commissioner for Children's Rights called for a shift from crisis management to prevention, emphasizing the necessity of organized support plans and coordinated protocols among responsible ministries. Officials aim to implement solutions within the next six months to a year and a half, stressing urgency in protecting these children's welfare.
