Turkish Cypriot Academic Pays Respectful Tribute to Late Publisher Vasos Ftochopoulos

Turkish Cypriot academic and former MEP Niyazi Kizilyurek paid a candid tribute to the late publisher and restaurateur Vasos Ftochopoulos, who passed away last week at age 76. Kizilyurek described Ftochopoulos as a unique personality known for his controversial rhetoric described as "anarcho-nationalism." Despite their long-standing disagreements and Ftochopoulos' often harsh views on Greek Cypriots supporting federalism, Kizilyurek expressed respect and refrained from harsh words upon his passing.

Kizilyurek recalled their first meeting in 1988 at Ftochopoulos’ restaurant, Aegeon, where a provocative slogan inside sparked controversy. Though their animosity lasted decades, including Ftochopoulos' public criticisms of Kizilyurek’s works, the academic noted Ftochopoulos’ sincere beliefs shaped by his experience as a refugee. He concluded his tribute with condolences to Ftochopoulos’ family and admirers, wishing him peace despite their historical conflicts.
