Nine EU countries delay full implementation of new biometric border Entry-Exit System
Nine European countries, including France, Italy, Germany, and Belgium, have not fully implemented the EU's biometric Entry-Exit System (EES) for non-EU travelers despite the September 6 deadline. These countries have requested additional time to complete the rollout at certain airports and border crossings, mainly smaller airports, while major hubs like Frankfurt and Schiphol are compliant.
The EES records biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images to identify overstayers, visa violators, and travelers using forged documents. Since its launch, the system has logged around 200 million registrations and has prevented approximately 70,000 individuals from entering the Schengen area. Although the EU's formal ability to suspend non-compliant countries has expired, Brussels is not expected to take enforcement action.
Delays remain localized, with just 12 of some 1,500 crossing points still experiencing issues. Airlines have expressed concerns about lengthy queues and missed connections, calling for suspension of the system due to disruptions. A pre-authorization app to ease processing is being rolled out gradually, currently active only in Sweden and Portugal.
