Eastern Mediterranean launches METAVASEA project to support green transition in shipping
The Eastern Mediterranean is confronting significant environmental challenges linked to climate change, impacting coastal communities and economies. Central to this issue is the shipping industry, which is undergoing a crucial transformation towards alternative fuels, digital technologies, and reduced emissions. The Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) emphasizes that this shift must be people-centered, involving port cities, coastal residents, and society at large.
CYMEPA is partnering in the five-year METAVASEA project, coordinated by HELMEPA and supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The initiative aims to enhance the skills of 1,500 seafarers and professionals while promoting environmental awareness across the Eastern Mediterranean. A recent survey conducted under METAVASEA revealed high public concern about global warming (97%) and strong support for shipping decarbonisation (78%), though awareness of shipping’s greenhouse gas contribution remains limited.
To better tailor education and information efforts, CYMEPA is urging residents, particularly those in coastal areas of Cyprus, to participate in an anonymous online METAVASEA questionnaire. This engagement seeks to empower communities to actively shape a sustainable and environmentally respectful future for the region’s shipping sector.
