New Attorney-General Office Building Cost Increased by €23 Million to €68 Million
The new Attorney-General’s office building in Nicosia has seen its estimated cost rise significantly, escalating by €23 million to a total of €68 million since the initial tender three years ago. The original 2023 tender valued the project at €45 million, excluding VAT, but was cancelled by the government citing budgetary constraints amid controversies and objections from the auditor-general.
Former auditor-general Odysseas Michaelides raised concerns about the need for such a large building, designed for 400 employees, when the AG’s office workforce numbers 193, pointing out the high cost of €133,000 per employee. Despite these objections and a public spat with Attorney-General George Savvides, the project plans have remained largely unchanged in size and specifications.
A new tender identical to the 2023 proposal was launched in September 2026, with construction expected to begin in April 2027 and last 48 months. The architectural contract appears awarded to the same firm, EP Architects. The current offices remain in central Nicosia near the presidential palace, while the new building promises expanded facilities and a 12-year upkeep plan.
