Etek calls for urgent safety review after fatal Peyia construction accident
The Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (Etek) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 52-year-old Konstantinos Posnagkof in a construction accident in Peyia, urging the sector to immediately review safety protocols. Posnagkof, a concrete mixer driver, died after a concrete pump truck severed overhead power lines at the site, causing fatal injuries.
Etek stressed that health and safety must be a non-negotiable priority from the earliest stages of construction projects, emphasizing that prevention needs to be integrated into design and planning. The chamber called for collective responsibility from all parties involved, including project owners, engineers, contractors, and workers, in maintaining strict safety standards.
Police arrested two individuals connected to the incident: the 53-year-old pump operator who was controlling the boom at the time, and the 46-year-old contractor. Investigations continue with cooperation between police, labour inspectors, and electricity authority personnel to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
