Cyprus company in Limassol defrauded of 105,000 euros via fake email invoice
A Limassol-based company fell victim to an internet fraud scheme involving a false email that led to a payment of 105,000 euros. The perpetrators sent a fake message, appearing to come from a legitimate foreign supplier, including a counterfeit invoice requesting payment to their bank account.
The company made the payment on August 25, following instructions in the fraudulent email. The scam was uncovered on September 14 when the company contacted the real supplier and discovered the email and bank details were fraudulent. The Limassol Financial Crime Investigation Unit is currently investigating the case.
Authorities urge business owners and managers to educate staff about this scam, known as invoice fraud, and to implement verification procedures for payment requests. Additional information and prevention tips are available on the Cyprus Police website.
