Restoration of Paphos lighthouse auxiliary buildings and surroundings completed revealing Roman-era water system
Restoration work on the auxiliary buildings of the Paphos lighthouse and the landscaping of the surrounding areas has been completed, the Cyprus Antiquities Department announced. The project included creating access paths and excavating a cistern, pebbled floor, and canal, believed to be part of a Roman-era water management system dating back to the first to second century AD.
The 20-metre lighthouse, constructed in 1888 during British administration, has served as a vital navigational aid in Paphos for over a century. The auxiliary buildings once housed lighthouse keepers and their families until automation led to their retirement in 1982. Located within the archaeological site of Kato Paphos, the lighthouse itself is modern but stands amid a “unique coexistence” of historical periods.
Officials highlighted the lighthouse’s emblematic status as the largest recognizable lighthouse in Cyprus and its continued role in maritime navigation. It remains an important landmark for the city and an integral feature of the adjacent archaeological heritage site.
