UN Secretary-General to Meet Cyprus Leaders Amid Low Prospects for Talks Resumption
Efforts are underway to arrange separate meetings between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, along with his personal envoy, aimed at resuming talks on the Cyprus problem. These meetings will coincide with the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, although prospects remain low due to limited Turkish interest in restarting negotiations.
Guterres plans to meet all parties next week, hoping to gather views before deciding on future steps. Preparations continue with substantive talks between negotiators and a planned leaders’ meeting on September 17. Meanwhile, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides expressed commitment to restarting talks and thanked China for its unwavering support concerning Cyprus’s sovereignty and a comprehensive solution to the conflict.
On a different note, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman focused on sports diplomacy, highlighting youth football tournaments as a peace-building avenue. Christodoulides will also hold his inaugural meeting with the new US Ambassador John Breslow to discuss bilateral relations, including defense cooperation following the US arms embargo lift renewal through 2027.
