Cyprus and Greece advance integration of air defence systems for enhanced regional security
Cyprus and Greece are progressing with the integration of their air defence systems to create a unified operational picture across the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean regions. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias discussed enhancing interoperability, centering on linking Cyprus's BARAK MX systems with Greece's €3 billion Achilles Shield programme. This collaboration aims to connect various sensors and radars through a centralized command-and-control system for more effective threat detection and response.
The integrated architecture, based on the principles of Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), enables real-time data sharing and 'track fusion' from multiple radars to identify, assess, and prioritize airborne threats such as drones, aircraft, and missiles. This network-centric approach allows for coordinated engagement assignments while maintaining individual system fire-control autonomy.
Minister Palmas underscored the initiative's significance in strengthening national security and modern threat response capabilities. However, achieving lasting interoperability demands sustained coordination beyond political cycles, emphasizing institutional continuity and commitment at high levels to maintain a common operational picture over time.
