The Great Sea Interconnector, a 1,208-kilometre subsea power cable linking Israel, Cyprus, and Greece, has emerged as a controversial venture that poses significant financial and geopolitical challenges for Cyprus. Despite the European Union's framing of the project as a vital energy transition, the European Investment Bank has raised concerns about the project's disproportionate costs, which Cyprus consumers are expected to cover 63% of, potentially resulting in long-term tariff surcharges.

Beyond economic concerns, the interconnector exacerbates geopolitical tensions in the Levantine Basin. It places Cyprus at the center of a regional contest involving Turkey’s rejection of established maritime rights and its militarized presence in northern Cyprus, which includes advanced UAV and naval facilities. The project aligns Cyprus with an Israeli-led security framework, increasing the risk of confrontation in contested waters where Turkey has demonstrated naval coercion.

This strategic alignment has compromised Cyprus’ traditional neutrality and flexibility, exposing it to asymmetric retaliation without binding defense guarantees. Additionally, cheaper and less risky alternatives for grid stability exist but have been overlooked. The interconnector’s implementation threatens Cyprus with both economic overextension and entanglement in a volatile regional security environment, undermining its sovereignty and long-term energy resilience.
