A parliamentary Environment Committee debate scheduled for next Wednesday has ignited controversy after adding an agenda item targeting bird-protection and anti-poaching groups in Cyprus, notably the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS). The move, initiated by ELAM MPs, has drawn fierce opposition from other political parties who view it as an attempt to undermine activists exposing illegal bird trapping.
While ELAM, DISY, and DIKO support examining the activities of these environmental activists under a revised agenda title, AKEL and ALMA oppose the debate, sparking a sharp political clash. The session, expected to be tense, will include officials from the Ministry of Justice, Police, Game Service, and representatives of local authorities and environmental organisations.
Meanwhile, CABS reported notable successes during its autumn campaign, leading to arrests of poachers found using illegal methods in the Famagusta district and removal of hundreds of illegal trapping devices. Police also issued a €13,500 fine to a 36-year-old linked to poaching activities in Larnaca. The coordinated actions highlight ongoing challenges in curbing illegal bird hunting on the island amid growing political tensions around activism.
