Famagusta District Reduces Water Losses Significantly but Challenges Remain
Water losses in Cyprus continue to be a major issue, with millions of cubic metres lost annually. The Famagusta District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has managed to reduce its water loss rate from 47.2% in 2024 to 34% in 2026, equating to a drop from over 2.6 million to about 1.8 million cubic metres of lost water. This represents a significant step forward in addressing unbilled water usage.
Despite overall improvement, some areas within the district still experience high losses. Liopetri and Avgorou notably maintain high loss rates, while Ayia Napa and Paralimni face fluctuating losses, although Paralimni remains the highest in volume. DLGO’s efforts are focused on key areas accounting for most unbilled volume, including targeted repairs and the installation of smart meters, pending approval of state funding.
The organisation is also implementing diagnostic work on the network to detect leaks, verify meter accuracy, and address physical and apparent losses including theft and meter deviations. Ongoing and planned measures indicate a commitment to further reduce water loss and improve efficiency across the Famagusta district.
