Ground erosion along Oroklini’s coastal promenade has worsened significantly, causing sections of the walkway to collapse dangerously near hotels, restaurants, and residences. The Larnaca Municipality has highlighted the situation as unsafe and unpredictable, with repeated complaints from residents about new holes and deteriorating areas previously patched. Tourists continue to visit despite visible damage, including near an outdoor gym and lower promenade extensions.
Municipal officials emphasize that the erosion problem has persisted for nearly a year without a permanent solution, with responsibility unclear among authorities. While the municipality plans repairs funded in the 2027 budget, it lacks the technical expertise and legal mandate to address the erosion comprehensively. A Department of Public Works study is underway but may take up to two years, leading to calls for intermediate safety measures.
Experts point to improperly positioned breakwaters and concrete promenades as drivers of the erosion, correlating with recent drownings near the area’s breakwaters. The Public Works Department attributes responsibility to the municipality and notes proposed erosion control measures were not implemented.
