Animal Party Cyprus calls for peaceful protest against parliamentary scrutiny of environmental activists
The Animal Party Cyprus has urged citizens, organisations, and activists to join a peaceful protest outside the House of Representatives on September 16 at 10am. The protest opposes a parliamentary Environment Committee session examining environmental activist groups, which the party criticises for vague accusations without evidence. The Animal Party insists environmental activists are vital members of civil society and that existing laws, rather than parliamentary scrutiny, should address any wrongdoing.
Separately, the ALMA Movement expressed concern over the agenda item’s wording, which it says targets environmental groups. ALMA supports legitimate environmental activism and active citizen involvement but opposes illegal actions. It highlighted that those breaking laws, such as illegal killing of protected birds, should face scrutiny rather than those reporting such activities. ALMA also criticised the political decisions behind committee chairmanships, questioning the inclusion of controversial parties.
Both ALMA and the Animal Party stress the importance of protecting activists’ rights while focusing on genuine threats like poaching and environmental destruction. The planned protest underscores tensions within parliament over how to handle environmental advocacy and enforcement issues.
