Cyprus to equip all schools with air conditioning units by 2028, president announces
President Nikos Christodoulides has confirmed that all schools in Cyprus will have air conditioning units installed by 2028 as part of a wider government initiative to improve school infrastructure. The announcement came during his visit to Ayios Dhometios middle school in Nicosia at the start of the new academic year, where he highlighted education as a top government priority.
Current data from the education ministry reveals varying progress across districts, with Famagusta leading at 65% of primary schools equipped, while Paphos and Nicosia lag behind at 16% and 24% respectively. Middle and high schools show better progress, with near completion in many areas; every high school in Larnaca has functioning air conditioning units.
Education Minister Athena Michaelidou emphasized the need for safety and infrastructure upgrades before installation can proceed, noting aging electrical systems in some schools require enhancement to support the new units. The ministry is collaborating with school boards and the electricity authority to ensure all electrical and fire safety standards are met before activating the air conditioning systems.
