Cypriot authorities played a crucial role in uncovering an illegal pharmaceutical laboratory in the basement of a pharmacy in Chalandri, Greece, during a coordinated police operation in June 2026. The lab, operated without a license and failing good manufacturing standards, was discovered after Cyprus Pharmaceutical Services found unregulated medicines in possession of Cypriot healthcare professionals, products suspected to have originated from Greece.

The investigation began in Cyprus when authorities identified various pharmaceutical and injectable products circulating outside legal supply chains. These findings were shared with Greece’s National Organisation for Medicines (EOF), leading to a months-long probe culminating in the arrests of 14 individuals and the seizure of over 40,800 pharmaceutical products, doping substances, and raw materials.

The case recently gained renewed attention due to its links with the investigation into the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis. Documents associated with a doctor under investigation for Mazonakis’s death were found at the Chalandri pharmacy, although officials have yet to clarify the nature of these documents. Authorities continue to examine any connections between the pharmaceutical lab and the circumstances surrounding the singer's cardiac arrest.
