Cyprus to unveil new housing plan aiming to double mountain community populations in next decade
President Nikos Christodoulides announced plans to introduce a new housing strategy designed specifically for mountain communities, targeting a population increase in the Troodos region and Tillyria from 32,000 to 64,000 residents within ten years. The initiative will be unveiled shortly and aims to address the demographic challenges faced by these areas.
Speaking at an awards ceremony for graduates from mountain areas, Christodoulides emphasized collaboration with local leaders to achieve this ambitious goal. The forthcoming plan, developed in consultation with residents, builds on the government's housing efforts, which have already seen over €300 million invested in more than ten new schemes, with 5,500 housing units currently underway.
The president also highlighted the government's commitment to sustaining education and welfare services in remote regions, citing examples such as keeping a primary school open with only one pupil and operating small orientation classes in secondary schools. Additionally, a €3 million program funded by Helleniq Energy and EKO will support more than 200 young families and provide free breakfasts to 660 children in local public preschools.
