Turkish Cypriot legislature abolishes mixed voting system ahead of December elections
The Turkish Cypriot legislature voted on Thursday to abolish the mixed voting system for the upcoming legislative elections, most likely scheduled for December 6. The change means voters will now have to choose candidates exclusively from one party, ending the previous system which allowed voters to select candidates from multiple parties. The motion passed with 26 votes in favor and 19 against.
Supporters, including members of the ruling coalition, argued that mixed voting encouraged cross-party personal bargaining that undermined voter intent. They stated the new system will foster competition based on party vision and projects rather than informal agreements. Opposition leader Sila Usar Incirli cautioned that changing election rules so close to voting could cause disruptions and criticized the move for lacking broad consensus.
The new voting options will be "stamp"—indicating party preference only—or "stamp and preference," allowing voters to pick candidates from the chosen party. The decision also sets the legislative election date to coincide with Turkish Cypriot local elections on December 6, a move supported by the government but viewed with concern by the opposition regarding potential logistical challenges.
