Haematologist Sotiris Koumas has warned the public against using plasmapheresis outside established therapeutic settings, emphasizing that the procedure can lead to complications ranging from mild to serious. Speaking amid public concern following the death of Giorgos Mazonakis and reports linking plasmapheresis to anti-ageing treatments, Koumas stressed that this medical procedure is designed for specific conditions and should only be performed at specialised centres.

Plasmapheresis involves removing and replacing a patient’s plasma to eliminate harmful substances such as pathological proteins or autoantibodies. It is commonly used in haematology and neurology, with conditions like thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura requiring urgent plasmapheresis for patient survival. However, the procedure carries risks, including catheter-related injuries, infections, allergic reactions to donor plasma, blood pressure drops, and electrolyte imbalances that must be managed in a hospital environment.

Koumas also highlighted the importance of regulatory oversight by the health ministry to ensure facilities meet licensing requirements and called for stepped-up inspections. He cautioned against using plasmapheresis solely for anti-ageing purposes, underscoring the medical principle of "first, do no harm," and reiterated that prevention of risk factors remains an effective primary approach to health management in Cyprus.
