DISY Supports President’s Clear Position on Great Sea Interconnector, Urges Unified Government Stance
After months of criticism from the opposition, DISY has shifted its tone to welcome President Nikos Christodoulides’s recent clarification on the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. The party praised the President’s comments on renewed coordination with France and Greece, calling the involvement of French investment company Meridiam ‘‘decisively important’’ for the project's progress. DISY urged the President to ensure a unified government position, emphasizing the need to avoid mixed messages that create public uncertainty.
DISY also expressed support for Cyprus taking an active role in the project by acquiring a stake in the GSI’s share capital, aiming to make the country a ‘‘protagonist’’ rather than a ‘‘spectator.’’ Meanwhile, AKEL pressed the Finance Minister for further clarity on the project’s total cost, legal options to withdraw from commitments, and potential financial risks for Cypriot consumers. Despite concerns, significant progress has been made, including the manufacturing of the cable by French company Nexans, with seabed surveys ongoing and coordination at high levels continuing to advance the project.
