Cyprus Gender Equality Commissioner Urges Investment in Care Services as Economic Priority at EU Conference
Josie Christodoulou, Cyprus’ gender equality commissioner, emphasized the importance of treating investment in care services not just as an equality issue but also as a key economic and competitiveness matter during a high-level EU conference in Dublin. Speaking at the event titled “The EU’s Equality Advantage,” she highlighted the impact of care responsibilities on women, noting that 36% of women spend over 35 hours weekly on care compared to 18% of men, and that 12% of women with caring responsibilities have left employment due to these duties.
Christodoulou discussed Cyprus’ ongoing measures, including extending compulsory pre-primary education and expanding adult and elder care services, aimed at improving access to affordable, quality care. She also underlined the need for a cultural shift toward more equitable sharing of care duties within households to enhance gender equality and economic outcomes.
Data from the European Institute for Gender Equality presented at the conference underscore the economic benefits of closing gender gaps, estimating a potential 10% GDP per capita rise in the EU by 2050, with an addition of 10.5 million jobs and over €3 trillion in economic gains. The conference also explored how digital transformation might influence inequalities in the workplace.
