President Christodoulides hosts Olympiacos Piraeus ahead of Nicosia basketball tournament
President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed a delegation from Olympiacos Piraeus basketball club at the presidential palace on Friday. The team, reigning European champions, are participating in the Neophytos Chandriotis tournament held in Nicosia from Friday to Sunday at the Tassos Papadopoulos Eleftheria stadium.
Christodoulides expressed his personal support for Olympiacos, declaring himself a proud fan. He highlighted recent government investments of around €17 million in sports infrastructure, which have improved stadium facilities and enabled Cyprus to host a EuroBasket group. He also assured the club that Limassol’s stadium remains available if issues arise with the AEK Athens ground.
Olympiacos representatives conveyed gratitude for the warm reception in Cyprus. General manager Nikos Lepeniotis noted the strong local support, while head coach Giorgos Bartzokas invited the president to attend a match in Athens, reinforcing the close ties between the club and Cyprus.
