Hundreds attend funeral of influential Cypriot writer and publisher Vasos Ftochopoulos
Hundreds gathered at Saint Barbara’s church in Kaimakli on Friday to mourn the passing of Vasos Ftochopoulos, a renowned writer, publisher, and restaurateur who died last week at the age of 76. The funeral attracted a diverse congregation including prominent figures from culture, journalism, theatre, and literature, alongside members of the public.
Born in Karpasia in 1950 and raised in London and Thessaloniki, Ftochopoulos was deeply involved in political and social life. He founded Aegeon publications and ran the Aegeon tavern in Nicosia, a notable artistic and intellectual hub. Colleagues remembered him as a sharp-witted individual who championed marginalized groups, often welcoming minorities at a time when inclusion was far from common.
His prolific career included establishing the newspaper Enosis and producing numerous works such as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "I Will Go to My Mother." Funeral speeches by former Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou and author Giorgos Karambelias highlighted Ftochopoulos's lasting impact on Cypriot culture and society.
