Nicosia municipality ramps up mosquito spraying after rainfall highlights breeding in homes

Nicosia municipality is intensifying mosquito spraying efforts across the city following recent rainfall, which has led to over 60% of mosquito breeding sites being found inside residential properties. Municipal health services chief Michalis Lagos explained that the combination of rain, sunshine, and high temperatures created ideal conditions for mosquitoes to hatch.

Health officer Efi Hadjikosti revealed that staff are working overtime, including weekends, to handle the surge in resident complaints. The most affected area is Engomi, where many breeding grounds are linked to common household items such as flowerpot saucers, unused swimming pools, and pet water bowls. Residents are urged to regularly check and remove any standing water from their properties to break the mosquito life cycle.

The municipality continues scheduled spraying along riverbanks in areas including Engomi, Kaimakli, Pallouriotissa, and Aglandjia. Complaints can be reported via the Novoville app or by calling 22797000.
