Engomi Stormwater Infrastructure Deemed Insufficient After Repeated Flooding Incidents
The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has acknowledged that Engomi's current stormwater system is insufficient, with surrounding areas lacking any proper drainage systems. This admission follows severe flooding in late August that inundated an underground parking facility twice, highlighting serious drainage deficiencies across the neighborhood.
The DLGO plans to update or create a new hydrological study to redesign the drainage network and will implement temporary relief measures at four key locations, including Zisimopoulou Street. Meanwhile, residents of a flat at the base of a 400-metre downhill slope, whose basement has flooded six times in three years, are pursuing legal action against the authority due to persistent damage and safety risks posed by flooding.
August saw the wettest rainfall since 1901, with extreme storms overwhelming the drainage capacity. Residents emphasize that runoff from nearby streets overwhelms clogged drains, and internal pumps fail during heavy rain, necessitating prolonged Fire Service intervention. Despite the DLGO's recommendation to install a barrier gate and maintain pumps, the community calls for comprehensive, fair treatment and permanent solutions to prevent further property damage.
