UNFICYP Commander Lt. Gen. Minhazul Alam Withdrawn Amid Misconduct Complaints

Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam has been withdrawn from his post as commander of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) following written complaints regarding his conduct towards mission officers. Although his return to Bangladesh was officially marked as personal leave on September 4, sources reported that he was subsequently removed from the mission entirely.

The complaints, reportedly filed by his aide-de-camp and another mission officer, involved allegations of "improper" and "harsh" behavior. The issue was serious enough to involve UN medical or psychiatric services. Minhazul Alam was appointed UNFICYP commander in April 2023 and holds the rank of Lieutenant General.

Additional concerns about administrative privileges requested by Alam have been mentioned, but details remain unclear. There is no public information on any formal UN investigation or disciplinary measures. Until the complaints or investigation findings are released, the allegations remain unproven.
