Akel outlines conditions for 2028 presidential candidate, emphasizes Cyprus settlement priority
Akel Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou announced that the party will only support a candidate for the 2028 presidential elections who prioritizes the Cyprus settlement based on the agreed framework. Addressing the party’s 100th anniversary, Stefanou firmly rejected backing any candidate who serves current governance models favoring the well-being of the few or corrupt practices.
Stefanou emphasized Akel’s goal to form a broad social movement advocating progressive change ahead of the 2028 elections. While not naming a candidate, he referenced former presidential hopeful Andreas Mavroyiannis, who was supported by Akel in 2023 and remains a potential contender. Stefanou sharply criticized recent governments for neglecting infrastructure investments, energy, water management, and for enabling corruption.
The centenary event also highlighted Akel’s historical evolution from its 1926 founding as the Communist Party of Cyprus, through challenges during British colonial rule, to its status as a major political force today. Closing his speech, Stefanou called for Akel to persevere into its second century, maintaining its commitment to social justice and democratic progress.
