Cyprus to increase child benefits and expand eligibility from January 2027
Cyprus plans to raise child benefit payments by up to 10% and widen income eligibility thresholds starting January 1, 2027, following Cabinet approval of a €12.5 million reform. Approximately 17,000 families and 23,500 children are expected to benefit if parliament passes the changes. The reform increases benefits by 10% for families earning up to €22,000 and 5% for those earning up to €44,000. Eligibility will also expand for larger families, with income thresholds raised to €90,000 for those with three children and €100,000 for families with four children.
Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou emphasized that the reform removes the longstanding issue where slight income increases resulted in an abrupt loss of benefits. This change ensures that small income rises do not disqualify families from receiving support. Additionally, the reform includes supplementary subsidies and meal programs for schooling, potentially helping up to 2,800 children.
The government highlighted the importance of combining benefits with services to achieve positive outcomes and confirmed that the reform now awaits approval by the House of Representatives to take effect.
