EU Parliament urges cautious, strategic approach to China focusing on economic resilience and human rights
The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has called for a more cautious and assertive EU-China policy aimed at reducing economic vulnerabilities while preserving dialogue on global issues like climate change and security. The committee emphasizes urgent action to diversify supply chains and protect key sectors such as critical raw materials, semiconductors, electric vehicles, and information technology, to reduce dependence on China.
MEPs advocate a rigorous “de-risking” strategy and stress the need for reciprocity in trade, demanding that the EU take proportionate measures if China restricts market access. At the same time, they support stronger international partnerships through initiatives like the EU’s Global Gateway, which promotes sustainable and transparent infrastructure investments as alternatives to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Beyond economic concerns, the Parliament calls for a more robust stance on human rights in China, including addressing forced labor and repression in Tibet and Xinjiang, alongside safeguarding Europe’s democratic institutions from foreign interference. Rapporteur Hilde Vautmans summarized the approach as seeking a sustainable partnership based on clear rules, fairness, and respect for human rights and international law.
