Cyprus Ministry of Education says 97% of school textbooks delivered despite delay claims
Cyprus’s Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth has dismissed claims of a textbook shortage in public schools as exaggerated, confirming that 97% of the approximately 700 titles required for the 2026-27 academic year have already been delivered. The ministry cited delays from some contractors due to technical issues but reassigned work to new contractors to minimize disruption.
To bridge gaps caused by delayed deliveries, the ministry arranged for partial materials to be produced in booklet form by the Government Printing Office, ensuring uninterrupted teaching without requiring teachers to photocopy daily. Additionally, previously delivered publications and digital versions of all textbooks are available on the ministry’s website for students and teachers.
The ministry criticized education organizations for escalating issues that are actively being addressed, noting concerns over complaints related to teacher evaluation and participation in initiatives on student safety and health. It stressed that procurement followed public tender rules and that the situation does not reflect the crisis portrayed in some media reports.
