Denia leader urges stronger UN peacekeeper presence to reduce buffer zone violations
Charalambos Alexandrou, the community leader of Denia village, has called for a more noticeable presence of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp) in the area surrounding his village. Speaking after a meeting with Unficyp chief Khassim Diagne, Alexandrou expressed concern over ongoing violations by the Turkish side in the buffer zone. Although Diagne acknowledged the issues and promised to try increasing patrols, he noted Unficyp's current understaffing limits their ability to intervene.
Tensions in the buffer zone between Nicosia and Morphou, including Denia, have persisted, with continuous violations and disputes over farmland usage, particularly near Avlona village. Both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot farmers sometimes inadvertently cross buffer zone boundaries due to unclear demarcations. In response, Unficyp has implemented measures such as improved signage to prevent accidental crossings and to maintain stability.
The situation remains sensitive, with Unficyp monitoring incidents closely to prevent escalation. Alexandrou emphasized the need for a sustainable solution to avoid more serious problems, urging the peacekeepers to shift from mere observation to active intervention in buffer zone affairs.
