Vandalism of Queer Wave banners in Nicosia sparks concerns over queer visibility
Banners promoting Queer Wave, an LGBTQIA+ film festival, were vandalised in the Kaimakli area of Nicosia, according to the organisers. They described the incident as an attack on queer visibility in public spaces and stressed that it should not be seen as an isolated event but as an effort to limit the presence of the queer community.
Despite the vandalism, Queer Wave organisers affirmed their commitment to continue their work. "We will not let intimidation silence us. We will continue to claim space, tell our stories and build our community," they said. The festival, which started in 2020, will hold its seventh consecutive edition from 18 to 27 September at the NiMAC exhibition spaces in Nicosia.
The 10-day programme features film screenings, performances, and events highlighting LGBTQIA+ experiences and queer expression, showcasing local and international artists. Queer Wave 2026 is organised by the non-profit Queer Wave LTD and funded by the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Department of Contemporary Culture.
