Cyprus ready to host trilateral peace talks with Israel and Lebanon if invited
Cyprus has expressed readiness to host a trilateral meeting involving Israel and Lebanon to promote regional peace, following Israeli President Isaac Herzog's public support for such talks during his visit to Nicosia. Herzog described the meeting as a personal "dream" and emphasized its importance for advancing peace in the region. While Cyprus is open to facilitating the dialogue, officials noted that any progress depends on willing participation from Israel and Lebanon, both of which are currently managing domestic challenges.
During talks between Herzog and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, discussions encompassed defence cooperation, with Israel identified as a key defence supplier for Cyprus. Israeli defence firms have also shown interest in establishing a presence on the island, possibly benefiting from EU defence funding initiatives. Energy issues, including the Ishai-Aphrodite gas field and the Great Sea Interconnector, were prioritized, with ongoing progress reported. The leaders also addressed long-standing issues such as a Cyprus-Israel double taxation agreement and Israeli investment activities in the occupied areas.
The two countries reviewed preparations ahead of the upcoming Israeli elections, acknowledging the uncertain outcome but reaffirming strong bilateral relations. Cyprus indicated it is fully prepared to adapt to any electoral results in Israel, highlighting the historical development of their cooperation.
