Paphos dam water reserves rise sharply in 2026, reaching 43.3 million cubic metres
Water reserves in the main dams of Paphos have increased significantly compared to last year, now holding approximately 43.3 million cubic metres, according to Alexios Frangeskou, Executive Engineer at the Water Development Department (WDD). The Paphos Irrigation Project dams collectively contain 30.9 million cubic metres, or 39.2% capacity, up from 9.4 million cubic metres a year earlier, while the Chrysochou Irrigation Project dams hold 12.4 million cubic metres, or 42.5% capacity, up from 3.8 million cubic metres in 2025.
Frangeskou attributed the rise to increased inflows during the 2025-2026 hydrological year, aided by beneficial spring rains and isolated summer showers that reduced irrigation demand. Overflow water from certain dams also boosted agricultural production without counting against farmers' annual water allocations. Despite the improved figures, he emphasized the need for multi-year water management due to more frequent droughts and climate variability in Cyprus.
The WDD relies increasingly on desalination and reclaimed water reuse to supplement dam reserves, with about half of Paphos’s annual 20 million cubic metres for water supply now sourced from desalination. Approximately five million cubic metres of reclaimed water were allocated for agriculture in 2026. Frangeskou stated there is currently no risk of water shortage but underscored the importance of continued rational water use and investment in non-conventional water sources to ensure long-term water security in the face of climate challenges.
