Greece bolsters military presence in Cyprus with frigates and F-16s amid regional cooperation
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis highlighted Greece's strategic deployment of frigates and F-16 fighter jets in Cyprus earlier this year as a significant demonstration of military power. This move followed an Iranian-made drone attack on Cyprus in March and has resulted in a continuous Greek naval presence, with the frigate Nikiforos Fokas being the latest addition, and F-16 jets stationed in Paphos.
Gerapetritis emphasized Greece's strengthened defense and international alliances, including enhanced ties with Gulf countries, India, and Israel. He underscored the importance of self-reliant defense capabilities amid global threats and described Greece as becoming an "exporter of security." The minister also addressed concerns about Israel’s air defense system cooperation, clarifying that Greece will operate a dedicated source code for the Achilles shield system, ensuring autonomous control despite initial reports suggesting Israeli oversight.
He stressed that Greece’s regional military cooperation and robust defense posture are not influenced by other countries' preferences but are grounded in strong alliances, economic strength, and credible governance, with plans to continue deepening ties particularly with Israel and strategic partners in the Arab world.
