Turkish Cypriot leader urges President Christodoulides to avoid trust-undermining initiatives
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman told President Nikos Christodoulides to refrain from actions that undermine trust during their meeting on Wednesday. The discussion focused on confidence-building measures and methodology, but no agreement was reached on new initiatives. Erhurman emphasized the importance of creating a conducive climate for progress, as highlighted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Erhurman expressed concerns over Greek Cypriot-led cancellations of international events in the north, including a FC Barcelona children’s football camp and a music festival in Kyrenia. He also criticized recent arrests related to property disputes and Cyprus’s growing ties with Israel, which he believes erode trust between the communities.
Despite these challenges, Erhurman noted the difficulty in achieving reconciliatory progress, stating that "writing history together" remains a complex task for both sides and the international community. He is scheduled to meet with Christodoulides again next week to continue discussions.
