Cyprus leaders nearing agreement on convergence document ahead of possible New York talks
President Nikos Christodoulides announced that a document outlining the convergences reached so far in Cyprus problem negotiations will be finalized within a matter of days. This milestone follows his recent meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, where discussions focused on methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures, showing progress as well as ongoing disagreements.
Christodoulides indicated that, once the document is ready, a joint meeting in New York may be arranged involving either the United Nations Secretary-General or his envoy, at either leader or negotiator levels. Preparations for another leaders’ meeting are underway, expected next week, preceded by talks between negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana.
Despite challenges and differing approaches, the president emphasized his clear commitment to reuniting Cyprus and not being swayed by external distractions. He expressed readiness to resume negotiations from their 2017 Crans-Montana point, highlighting that the focus remains on resolving the longstanding conflict and confidence-building between the two sides.
