Cyprus MPs urge government to solve unemployment benefit gap for education ministry support staff
Approximately 300 employees working in education ministry support programmes in Cyprus remain without unemployment benefits during the summer months. This issue was raised at the House education committee meeting, where MPs called on the government to address the problem promptly. Due to a change in employment arrangements, these workers remain officially employed over the summer and are therefore ineligible for unemployment benefits under current law.
MPs from various parties expressed concern over the financial insecurity faced by the affected staff. Diko MP Chrysanthos Savvides highlighted the crucial role of these support programmes and urged ministries to find a balanced solution. Disy MP Prodromos Alampritis noted that hundreds of teachers have worked in these programmes for years, while Akel MP Christos Christofides mentioned the loss of income spanning several months.
Representatives explained that the issue stems from workers being moved to permanent contracts, preventing eligibility for unemployment benefits which typically require employment termination. The education ministry was given three weeks to propose a resolution, as the current legal framework requires termination of employment before benefits can be granted.
