Engomi Flooding Highlights Insufficient Stormwater Infrastructure, Residents Seek Legal Action
The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has acknowledged that the current stormwater infrastructure in Engomi is inadequate, with some surrounding areas lacking drainage systems entirely. This admission follows severe flooding incidents in late August that submerged an underground parking facility twice. Inspections revealed multiple poorly drained areas and improperly constructed adjacent systems that hinder water flow, leading officials to describe the situation as "extremely serious."
In response, the DLGO is updating its hydrological study to redesign the drainage network and plans temporary relief works at four critical sites, including Zisimopoulou Street. Meanwhile, residents of a property located at the bottom of a 400-meter slope, which has experienced six basement flooding incidents in three years, are pursuing legal options. The flooding trapped about 60 tonnes of water, damaging Electricity Authority equipment and posing significant safety risks.
With August 2023 recorded as the wettest month since 1901, intense rainfall overwhelmed existing drainage systems, compounded by clogged drains and failed internal pumps. The DLGO has recommended that affected residents install barrier gates and maintain internal pumps, but calls for permanent infrastructure improvements continue amid growing concerns for property and public safety.
