Cyprus National Guard prioritizes readiness amid ongoing occupation, modernizes forces
Lieutenant General Emmanouel Theodorou, chief of the Cyprus National Guard, emphasized the importance of operational readiness on land, sea, and air due to the continued occupation of part of Cyprus and rapidly changing regional developments. Speaking at an event marking the patron saint of the Republic's armed forces, Theodorou highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance the National Guard with new technologies and procedures to ensure flexibility and effectiveness.
Theodorou reaffirmed the National Guard's role as the cornerstone of the nation's security and stability in the region. He noted the constant preparedness of the forces in defense of Cyprus's semi-occupied territory, expressing commitment to their mission until justice and legality are fully restored. The celebration also honored conscripts, whom Theodorou called the "present and future" of Cyprus.
The official Armed Forces Day event included a service at the Apostle Varnavas Cathedral and was attended by Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas, members of parliament, National Guard leadership, and representatives from various state services and local authorities.
