Mazotos residents demand scrapping of desalination plant plans to protect coastline
Residents of Mazotos are set to demand the complete cancellation of plans for a desalination plant in their village during a meeting with Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis. The Mazotos community council and the “Save the Coast” initiative, representing around 350 members, reiterated their strong opposition to the project, emphasizing that their concerns have so far been ignored.
Opposition has been ongoing since January, with residents highlighting the environmental risks to protected habitats, including Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. The community has called for the revocation or suspension of the project, requesting an independent environmental impact assessment and examination of alternative solutions. They argue the plant represents a heavy industrial installation likely to cause irreversible damage to the coast and contradict Cyprus’s climate neutrality goals.
While acknowledging Cyprus’ severe water shortage, the group criticized the government’s rushed decision-making and pointed out that no public consultation had taken place. They also expressed concerns over the stability of the coastal slope, warning the environmental impact on the broader region has not been adequately assessed.
