Majority of Cypriots now get news from social media, study finds
A recent study by the Union of Cyprus Journalists reveals that social media is the leading source of news for most Cypriots, surpassing traditional television and web portals. The survey of 1,000 media users highlights a steady increase in social media consumption alongside a decline in television viewership.
The study also uncovers significant distrust toward the media, with 49% of Cypriots expressing little to no trust and 61% perceiving the prevalence of fake news as very high. Social media and online portals are identified as the primary channels for misinformation. Additionally, 86% of respondents believe public opinion is manipulated, mainly by government bodies and media owners.
Journalists themselves report worrying conditions, with only 25% intending to remain in journalism long-term and a growing dissatisfaction with the profession. About half of Cypriots doubt journalists enjoy full freedom of expression, underscoring challenges facing Cyprus' media landscape.
