Livestock farmers' disinfection failures blamed for delay in Cyprus FMD recovery
Cyprus authorities have attributed delays in restarting livestock farming in areas affected by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) to some farmers failing to properly disinfect their premises. Veterinary services director Christodoulos Pipis stated that the resumption of operations depends largely on farmers' compliance with disinfection protocols, noting that some are postponing disinfection because they plan to exit the business. This inaction is impacting nearby farms ready to resume activities.
Since the outbreak, over 80,000 animals have been culled, amounting to significant proportions of the country's livestock, with 121 farms testing positive for FMD. Pipis warned that piecemeal disinfection increases the risk of re-infection and that fines or criminal proceedings are possible against non-compliant farmers, although legal processes may take years.
Authorities are preparing to convene stakeholders to discuss scientific recommendations, including spacing farming units at least 300 meters apart to prevent future spread. Under the veterinary services' roadmap, infected units may restart between November and December if no new cases arise, while the government faces challenges in compensating farmers leaving the sector.
