Justice Minister vows thorough investigations into police misconduct allegations in Cyprus
Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris assured on Tuesday that every complaint involving police officers will be thoroughly investigated, addressing recent allegations of collusion between officers and criminal groups. The claims stem from a newspaper report describing an anonymous complaint to the Anti-Corruption Authority alleging police collaboration with criminals who illegally accessed police communications and data systems. Although the complaint was dismissed due to anonymity, Fytiris emphasized that such matters are still taken seriously and scrutinized accordingly.
The minister also revealed that over 10 police officers have been suspended in the past six months for breaching their oath of office, with those convicted facing dismissal. Fytiris stressed the need to reform and "clean up" the police force. On a different note, regarding policing at sporting events, he mentioned that football clubs might eventually bear the cost of match security, but police presence at high-risk matches remains essential for the time being.
