Occupied Akanthou Transformed into Tourism Hub Amid Property Disputes and Development Pressures
Occupied Akanthou is rapidly evolving into a tourism destination similar to Ayia Napa, with a significant increase in holiday property construction, a member of the Pancyprian Refugee Association warned. Loizos Michael highlighted concerns over numerous properties held as undivided inheritance, often lacking formal title transfers, which leaves many properties in legal limbo. He estimated that up to half of the village’s properties might be affected by this issue.
Michael also warned that the absence of formal titles could be exploited, potentially leading to properties being claimed by others, especially amid ongoing disputes and the gradual disappearance of the last generation with direct ties to Akanthou. Construction fueled primarily by foreign investors, including Turkish businessmen, is spreading along a 20-kilometer coastline and into surrounding plains and mountain foothills.
The situation is compounded by the demographic shift, as those with first-hand connections to the village’s past are passing away, risking the loss of property rights knowledge among heirs. The Akanthou Municipality’s website confirms ongoing illegal property sales and building developments in the occupied area, drawing continued scrutiny from Republic of Cyprus authorities and the public.
